City and CUPE Local 170 Ratify New Collective Agreement
ELLIOT LAKE – The City and CUPE local 170 have ratified a new 5-year collective agreement spanning 2019 through 2023. The 5-year deal was ratified by the union membership last Thursday by a vote of 94% in favour. Council unanimously passed the new collective agreement bylaw at its Monday night meeting. The 5-year deal includes pay increases of 0.5% in year 1, 1.3% in year 2 and 1.5 % in years 3 through 5. The 0.5% in year 1 was reflective of a job evaluation and pay equity maintenance process that saw some wage adjustments outside of the required adjustments under the Pay Equity Act. The agreement came on the heels of a long jointly managed exercise to update job descriptions in some cases dating back several years.
“The Union is pleased that the parties have worked together to reach a deal that works for both parties and looks forward to working together with the City”, said Laura Delhenty, CUPE National Staff Representative.
“Management and CUPE are in a good place, we worked well together throughout 2020 to come up with a deal that works for both sides. We can see that in the high CUPE and Council ratification vote results. We look forward to continuing that trend through the term of this contract and beyond” said Daniel Gagnon, Chief Administrative Officer.
CUPE Local 170 had been without a contract since January 2019 while both parties undertook a thorough review of all job classifications and salaries.
